FKP - Journey from REC to the Present

Francis K Paul
Kuttukaran Group

My journey from the halls of REC, Calicut, to becoming a successful entrepreneur later on in life, encapsulates the spirit of entrepreneurship, resilience in the face of challenges, and the transformative power of education and innovation. My life’s path was marked by pivotal decisions that transformed our family’s business, the Kuttukaran Group, and propelled us towards success.

When I joined our family’s automobile spare parts retail business called Popular Automobiles, it was thriving. However, as part of diversification, we made a bold move into the retailing of industrial spares, tools and consumables and started the firm Popular Mill Stores in 1979. Leveraging my mechanical engineering background, we later on ventured into the manufacturing of engine rebuilding machinery, starting our first ever production unit named Kuttukaran Machine Tools. The firm was registered in 1981. These steps were natural progressions, driven by foresight, to diversify our business portfolio.

An inflection point came when we entered the automobile dealership sector to mitigate likely industry disruptions in the spare parts trade in future. Securing dealerships was not easy amidst fierce competition and political influences. Instead of succumbing to financial pressures, we emphasized our business acumen and organizational strength. This strategy not only secured us crucial partnerships but also earned admiration for our professionalism from OEMs. In 1984, we started the first ever Maruti Suzuki Car Dealership in Kerala at Thiruvananthapuram under the name Popular Vehicles and Services Ltd. Today it is one of the largest dealership networks for Maruti in India.

This decision stood us in good stead as the spare parts trade got disrupted soon after. On the dealership side, we expanded our horizons by adding more and more OEM brands under our dealership umbrella. In 1997, we entered the commercial vehicle dealership segment, associating with Tata Motors brand, under the company name Popular Mega Motors India Ltd. Today we have dealerships for Honda Cars (Vision Motors), Jaguar and Land Rover (Marqland), Bharat Benz (Prabal Motors), Ather Electric 2-wheelers and Piaggio Electric 3-wheelers (Both under the brand name Ecomarq), spread across Kerala, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Today, the Kuttukaran Group has a combined turnover of over ₹4,875 crores, a 10,000-plus strong workforce, combined with a network of over 434 touchpoints. In its 40-year dealership journey, we have so far sold more than 8 lakh new vehicles and serviced more than 8.5 million vehicles.

Apart from this the Group also has original spare parts distributorship for Maruti, Tata Commercial Vehicles, Tata Passenger Cars, Ashok Leyland and JCB, which operates under the name Popular Auto Dealers (P) Ltd. A training and education wing of the Group operates under the Kuttukaran Foundation, running the Kuttukaran Institute for HRD and the Kuttukaran Polytechnic College in Ernakulam District in Kerala. The K. P. Paul Foundation, in memory of the Late Founder undertakes CSR activities of the group by focusing on women empowerment through entrepreneurship. Till date 800 families have been supported by the women in those families, to earn their livelihood through entrepreneurship.

Along with me, my younger brother, John K. Paul, also an alumni of REC, Calicut; and Naveen Philip, a Mechanical Engineering Graduate from Govt. Engineering College, Thrissur and my nephew, are at the helm of the business today. While I carry a business experience of 54 years in the industry, my brother too has completed 49 years in business. Naveen is in the family business since 1997.

Challenges loomed large, particularly when a workers’ union was formed in the spare parts organization in the mid 80s, leading to a disruptive strike. Firm in our principles, we weathered the storm by standing our ground while investing heavily in the training and development of our workforce. This not only resolved immediate issues but also fostered a culture of mutual respect and productivity in the years to come.

Beyond business, we pioneered initiatives like the Popular Car Rally, aligning with our automotive roots and bolstering brand visibility. These rallies, initially novel in our region, became iconic events that drew national attention and participation from top national champions.

Reflecting on my REC education, it was more than academics; it shaped my leadership and technological acumen. Hostel life and campus interactions honed my interpersonal skills and broadened my perspective. REC’s engineering curriculum laid a strong foundation for embracing cutting-edge technologies early on, including computers, which became integral to our operational efficiency in business.

To give back my due contribution to this great institution that has shaped me, I have been fortunate enough to be closely associated with NITCAA (RECCAA) right from its very beginning and I still continue to play a role in fostering that organization. I may also mention here my Presidency in the RECCAA Club for 13 years, during which time, I believe, I have been able to add value through my humble interventions.

The culmination of our journey was a landmark IPO, which we attained most recently in March this year, making us one of the largest publicly listed automobile dealerships in the country. This milestone not only validated our vision and strategy but also signalled our commitment to transparency and growth.

My journey from REC Calicut to entrepreneurship is a testament to seizing opportunities, navigating challenges with integrity, and embracing innovation. It’s a story of how education, perseverance, and strategic foresight can transform humble beginnings into enduring success. Kuttukaran has consistently ranked among the best for innovation, human resource development, operating system and consistency of performance. The Group has always stuck to its core values of respect for people, customer focus, honesty and trust, knowledge and expertise and entrepreneurship. Owing to the uniqueness of its success story, even IIM Ahmedabad adopted it as a case study earlier, for aspiring management students. It continues in its endeavour to nurture and develop its human capital by providing them with immense opportunities for entrepreneurship and growth, and to take up higher and more challenging responsibilities and be a part of the success and growth of the organization.
